Rare Earth Bromide

Rare earth bromides are a class of compounds containing negative bromine (Br) and rare earth ions (Yb3+, Sm3+, Nd3+, Y3+, Eu3+/Eu2+, Gd3+, Ho3+, Tb3+, Dy3+, Tm3+ and Lu3+). The bromide ion is the ion formed when the bromine atom gains an electron. Bromide can also represent covalent compounds where the oxidation state of bromine is -1. The chemical formula of rare earth bromide is usually REBr3, and the valence state of rare earth is +3, but a few rare earth ions with +2 valence can also form rare earth bromide, such as EuBr2. Rare earth bromides are usually prepared by vacuum dehydration of their crystalline hydrates.

Synthesis method

Rare earth bromides are usually prepared by vacuum dehydration of their crystalline hydrates. Dissolving rare earth oxides in hydrobromic acid, evaporating and concentrating, can obtain crystal hydrates of rare earth bromides, and generally the number of crystal waters is 6-7. Dehydration of rare earth bromide crystal hydrates mixed with ammonium bromide can obtain higher purity rare earth bromides (the crystal hydrates of rare earth bromides will hydrolyze during the heating process). Another effective method for the synthesis of rare earth bromides is the direct solid-state reaction of rare earth oxides and ammonium bromide. Rare earth bromides require dry storage.
