Synthesis method

The preparation of rare earth chloride is mainly through electrode reaction:
Anode reaction: 2Cl- - 2e- → Cl2
Cathode reaction: RE3+ + 3e- → RE
Total reaction: 2RECl3 → 2RE + 3Cl2

Chlorine gas will be produced during the electrolysis process. The reason for the high solubility of rare earth chloride to rare earth metals is that the pollution of the electrolysis process is large, the quality of the product is poor, and the efficiency of the current is low, resulting in energy loss. The process of electrolyzing rare earth chlorides is replaced by rare earth chloride-oxide molten salt point electrolysis process. At present, an effective method is to dissolve rare earth oxides or carbonates in a hydrochloric acid solution to synthesize a rare earth chloride solution, and after dehydration, a mixed rare earth chloride that does not contain crystal water can be obtained. It can also be obtained by direct chlorination with mixed rare earth metals or their oxides and bastnaesite plus carbon.
