Rare earth elements are a group of seventeen chemical elements that occur together in the periodic table (see follow image). The group consists of the 15 lanthanide elements (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, and lutetium), scandium and yttrium are found in most rare earth element deposits and is sometimes classified as rare earth elements. The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry includes scandium in their rare earth element definition.
Rare earth elements were originally considered rare elements, although it is now known that many of them are actually abundant, among which cerium is the 25th most abundant material in the crust. Owing to the small amount of common ores coexist, making it difficult to mine rare earth ores, and they are usually produced as a by-product of other mining ores.
