At the current level of technology, all 16 rare earth elements except praseodymium (Pm) can be purified to a purity of 6N (99.9999%). In the mixed rare earth compound obtained after the decomposition of rare earth concentrate, it is relatively complicated to separate and extract a single pure rare earth element. Most rare earth ions have very similar radii between two adjacent elements, and the physical and chemical properties of lanthanides are very similar, thus they often coexist in rare earth minerals. When dealing with rare earth minerals, their aqueous solutions usually exist in the form of stable trivalent, which are protected by hydrates, making separation and purification extremely difficult. In addition, the mixed rare earth compound obtained after the decomposition of the rare earth concentrate has more relevant impurity elements (such as uranium, niobium, tantalum, titanium, zirconium, iron, calcium, silicon, fluorine, phosphorus, et al).
